The Budgong House, a contemporary residence situated in Kangaroo Valley’s challenging bushfire-prone environment, exemplifies how modern architecture can successfully integrate with Australia’s demanding natural conditions. Designed with an expansive and tailored glazing package to capture sweeping views and connect seamlessly with the surrounding landscape, this project required sophisticated solutions that could withstand extreme summer temperatures, strong winds, and bushfire threats while delivering exceptional energy efficiency and visual appeal.
This project showcases DLG Aluminium & Glazing’s expertise in delivering customised glazing solutions that meet stringent environmental and aesthetic requirements. Utilising AWS ThermalHEART™ products, the installation features thermally broken aluminium frames and double-glazed units designed to provide superior insulation, durability, and bushfire resistance.

Challenge

The location and design presented several unique challenges. Budgong House is built in a region exposed to extreme summer temperatures, strong winds, and bushfire conditions. The architectural design featured large spans of glass to connect with the outdoors, which needed to deliver high energy efficiency and comply with bushfire protection standards. Air tightness and insulation were also critical for long-term performance and comfort.

Solution

DLG Aluminium and Glazing delivered a tailored glazing package that prioritised thermal performance, bushfire resistance, and visual impact. Using AWS ThermalHEART™ frames and Low-E double-glazed units, the home benefits from improved insulation and energy savings. The selected systems also provide a refined, minimal profile that enhances the home’s contemporary look.

Highlights include:

Thermally Broken Frames: AWS ThermalHEART™ systems reduce heat transfer through the aluminium, helping maintain internal temperatures and comfort.

Double-Glazed Low-E Glass: Offers high insulation value, reducing heat gain in summer and heat loss in winter, while providing clear, unobstructed views.

Bushfire Compliant Glazing: The entire solution was designed to meet BAL requirements, providing essential protection in a fire-prone region.

Clean Architectural Lines: Slimline framing supports the visual concept of expansive openness and connection to the environment.

Results

The completed Budgong House achieves the perfect balance between beauty and performance. With uninterrupted views, high insulation, and bushfire resistance, the residence stands as a testament to how thoughtful glazing can transform a home. The materials and systems used ensure the home is ready for the challenges of its environment while offering a tranquil, light-filled living experience.
